Ethereum Wallet on Windows, Mac or Linux works just same as Bitcoin or Litecoin wallet, giving you complete ownership, no downtime, no government censorship, fraud (as long as you are alert) or third party interference. Managing your wallet on PC is like managing your physical wallet, you are solely responsible for protecting your money against thefts (online) and failures (hardware). Since your money is in digital format you can always have multiple backups and encryption so that nobody else can use your money.
Note : If you are looking forward to store your Ether (ETH) for a long term of period then mind checking our another guide to create Ethereum Paper Wallet.
In this tutorial, we will show you on how to create a completely secure Ethereum Wallet on a Windows PC.
Step One : Download the latest version of Ethereum Mist Wallet and extract the zip file you just downloaded.
- Now open the extracted folder and look for Ethereum-Wallet.exe file, double click the exe file to launch Ethereum Mist Wallet and click on Use The Main Network.
- In next screen you’ll be asked if you have presale wallet file, if you don’t click on skip.
Step Two : In the next step it’ll prompt you to make a new account for your Ethereum Wallet. Create a password (alphanumeric for better security) that you will never ever forget and create the account.
- Then, it’ll give you an address which starts with 0x——————-
There is a difference between accounts and wallets. An account you already have on opening the wallet for the first time it’s called Etherbase, this is your main account and you can send and receive Ether coins, the only downside is that you cannot see the transactions in the blockchain.
A wallet functions the same as an account but also contain transactions. First of all you must have at-least 1 Ether , before you can create a wallet contract (in which you can see transactions). This is a very small amount by charging the user, spam and abuse is prevented.
Step 3 : Once you install Mist, sync with the Blockchain (takes hours). The blockchain is a ledger of all transactions that ever occurred on the Ethereum network. Since all transactions is in public domain, one can find out how much value belonged to each address at any point in history. Then once your Mist instance has caught up with the Blockchain, you can do the transactions.
